The check-in people actually keep doing
A daily check-in only protects someone if they answer it every day. For most older adults, replying to a text is the easiest habit there is.
Works on the phone they already have
Any cell phone that gets texts will do, including a basic flip phone. No smartphone, no data plan, no app store account.
Nothing to install, update or log into
Apps get deleted, logged out, or silenced by a phone update. A text message just arrives, the same way it has for 25 years.
Hard to miss, easy to answer
The text waits in the inbox until they read it. If they still miss it, a reminder text follows, then a phone call.
What the texts say, and what counts as a reply
Every message is short and plain. OK or YES always works, and short everyday replies like "I'm fine" or "all good" count too.
| They reply | What happens |
|---|---|
| OK, YES, Y, okay | Checked in |
| "I'm fine", "all good", "yep, here" | Checked in |
| "not ok", "no" | Not counted as a check-in, so the safety net keeps running |
| HELP | A short reply explaining how it works |
| STOP | Stops future check-in texts until they text START |
What happens when a check-in is missed
If the text goes unanswered, here's the exact sequence for a 9:00 AM check-in. It stops the moment a reply arrives or a contact confirms they're on it.
- 9:00 AM
Check-in text
"Time for your daily check-in! Reply YES or OK by 9:30 AM."
- 9:30 AM
Reminder text
A second text, in case the first one was missed.
- 10:00 AM
Automated phone call
We call the phone directly. Answering and pressing 1 counts as checking in.
- 10:15 AM
Care circle alert
Your first contact gets a text, then a call two minutes later. About every 15 to 20 minutes the next contact is alerted, until one of them confirms they are on it.
If nobody responds, we go through the list again, up to three times. Contacts only receive alerts after they've opted in, so a wrong number never sits silently on the list.
Text check-in vs. apps, calls and pendants
Each option solves a slightly different problem. Prices are typical US ranges as of October 2026.
| Feature | Text check-in (CheckRise) | Check-in app | Automated call program | Medical alert pendant |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How you confirm | Reply to a text | Tap a button in an app | Answer a call and press a key | Press a button only when in trouble |
| Phone needed | Any cell phone, including flip phones | Smartphone with the app installed | Any phone, including landlines | The pendant plus a base station or cellular unit |
| Notices if they can't respond | Yes, silence triggers alerts | Yes, if notifications stay on | Yes, an unanswered call triggers alerts | Only with optional fall detection; otherwise someone has to press the button |
| Who gets alerted | Up to 5 family contacts, by text and call | Your contacts, usually by text or email | Varies: family, sometimes police | A monitoring center |
| Typical cost | $1 for 7 days, then $14.99/mo | Free to about $20/mo | Free (state programs) to about $15/mo | About $25 to $50/mo plus equipment |

Asked Questions
Common questions about daily text check-ins
It sends a person a text at the same time every day asking them to confirm they are okay. They reply, and that is the whole task. If no reply comes, the service follows up and then alerts the family or friends they chose. CheckRise sends a reminder text, places an automated call, and then texts and calls up to five contacts one by one.
Yes. CheckRise uses ordinary SMS text messages, so any cell phone that can send and receive texts works, including basic flip phones. Nothing needs to be downloaded.
Reply OK or YES. Short replies such as "I'm fine", "all good" or "yep" also count. A reply that contains "no" or "not" does not count as a check-in, so a message like "not okay" never cancels the alerts. If you are unwell, call someone or 911 rather than relying on the reply.
If a check-in is still waiting, you get a friendly text asking you to reply YES or OK. Replying late is fine too: an OK later the same day stops any reminders and family alerts for that check-in.
One check-in text per scheduled check-in, and you choose 1, 2 or 3 check-ins a day. A reminder text is only sent if you have not replied after 30 minutes. Standard message and data rates from your carrier may apply.
For noticing that something is wrong, yes, because both rely on silence: if no confirmation arrives, alerts go out. Text has two practical advantages for older adults. It works on any phone, and there is no app that can be deleted, logged out or silenced by an update.
No. The daily check-in is a text message, so it needs a cell phone. Our escalation call can reach any number, but the service is built around texting. If the only phone at home is a landline, an automated call program is a better fit.
Yes. Choose "for a loved one" when you sign up and enter their cell number. They receive a text explaining CheckRise and reply YES to start. You manage the schedule and the contact list from your own account.
Don't wait for the call you're afraid of
It takes 60 seconds to set up. It works from day one. And you'll never have to wonder "are they okay?" again.
